Thousands of Inquiries in One Year: Building Configurators’ Performance in Practice

3,282 inquiries from 78,791 visits. That is what the ten most powerful HiStruct online building configurators generated for manufacturers on the German market over a period of about one year.

An analysis of data from the top ten configurators used by building manufacturers shows that configurators are not just a website feature, but a stable source of real business opportunities. They allow manufacturers to respond quickly to quote requests, save time when preparing quotations, and gain valuable data about potential customers while a project is still in preparation.

What the German Market Data Show

Several dozen HiStruct configurators are currently active in the prefabricated building segment in Germany. More than 20 of them are available directly on manufacturers’ websites. We analyzed data from the ten most powerful configurators for steel and wooden buildings, covering roughly a one-year period and here is the result:

Configurators generate thousands of real inquiries. In the steel building segment, seven manufacturers recorded 57,555 unique visits and 2,217 submitted inquiries (conversion rate 3.9%). For wooden buildings, where we tracked 21,236 visits across three manufacturers, 1,065 inquiries were submitted via the configurator (conversion rate 5%). In total, the ten HiStruct configurators generated 3,282 inquiries from just under 79,000 visits.

Hidden Opportunities: Leads That Might Have Been Lost

Beyond direct inquiries, the data reveals another interesting effect. Some users save their design in the configurator for later and provide an email without submitting an inquiry. Altogether, this represents at least 1,700 additional contacts that companies would not have gained without the configurator and who would otherwise have remained anonymous. The configurator therefore captures not only finalized quoute requests but also customers in the decision-making phase, when the project is still being prepared. These “hidden leads” offer strong potential for sales and marketing.

Measurable Time Savings and Higher Efficiency

Configurators simplify the work of the sales team by providing complete, structured data for quote preparation. With a standard building quote request, manually collecting all parameters often requires several rounds of communication. The configurator shifts this step to the customer. As a result, sales teams receive a complete project brief immediately and can respond much faster.

With a higher volume of projects, this translates into dozens to hundreds of hours saved each month on administrative work.

The value of configurators also lies in involving the customer in the design process through online adjustments and 3D visualization, which allow rapid variant creation and effective communication.

Turning Visits into Real Business Opportunities

More than 3,000 inquiries from fewer than 80,000 visits show that a configurator is not just a marketing add-on to a website, but a stable source of projects. With typical website traffic of building manufacturers, a configurator can bring hundreds to thousands of concrete business opportunities every year.

Companies without a configurator usually gain contacts only through forms, phone calls, or emails. However, these channels capture only part of the demand. As a result, companies lose not only individual customers, but also a systematic source of sales opportunities.
